Halloween Comes Early in Philadelphia
The Masked Menace of Philadelphia: “Are You Ready to Die?”
It sounds like the opening scene of a low-budget horror movie.
It was still dark in Philadelphia on the morning of August 12, 2026. Most of the city had yet to wake up.
Then, shortly after 5 a.m., something strange began happening around City Hall.
A man dressed in black wandered the streets wearing a cracked porcelain doll mask. Long black hair hung from its sides. Empty eyeholes stared from an expressionless face.
Even worse, police say he wasn’t simply walking around.
He was approaching people.
And apparently trying to scare them.
A Nightmare Before Sunrise
According to Philadelphia police, the bizarre encounters began around 5:18 a.m. near 15th and Chestnut streets.
Over roughly the next 15 minutes, the masked stranger allegedly approached, chased or threatened at least half a dozen people around Center City.
At one point, he entered a Dunkin’ on the 1500 block of Chestnut Street. However, employees reportedly refused to serve him while he wore the mask.
So, he went back outside.
Minutes later, surveillance cameras captured him moving around the southwest corner of Penn Square near City Hall.
The strange behavior continued.
Then things became much more frightening.
“Are You Ready to Die?”
Police say the masked man eventually encountered a 40-year-old woman jogging near 15th and Market streets.
He allegedly stepped in front of her.
Then he asked a chilling question:
“Are you ready to die?”
The woman ran.
During her escape, she injured her leg. Meanwhile, the masked man continued moving through the area before eventually disappearing into Suburban Station.
Fortunately, the morning’s encounters did not end in a more serious physical attack.
Still, Philadelphia had a mystery on its hands.
Who was behind the mask?

There was another strange wrinkle.
The masked man appeared to be carrying a cellphone throughout the encounters.
Investigators believe he may have been recording himself as he frightened strangers. Authorities have suggested the incidents could have been staged for his own amusement or for content he intended to post online.
Suddenly, the whole thing sounded less like a random Halloween prank.
Police began asking the public for help.
Surveillance images showed the suspect wearing black clothing, sneakers and a distinctive blue backpack. Other footage captured the eerie doll mask from several angles.
The images quickly spread.
So did the story.
The Man Behind the Mask
For several days, his identity remained unknown.
Then tips began pouring in.
Finally, on August 20, Philadelphia police announced that they believed they knew the man behind the porcelain face.
Police identified him as 22-year-old Zymire Hughes.
An arrest warrant followed.
Authorities now allege Hughes was responsible for the bizarre string of encounters around City Hall.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has also asked anyone who believes Hughes victimized them to contact authorities. Because the jogger suffered an injury while escaping, Krasner said Hughes is expected to face an aggravated-assault charge in addition to other counts.
However, identifying him hasn’t ended the story.
Police still have to find him.
Wanted
As of August 20, Zymire Hughes remains wanted.
Investigators believe he may have fled Pennsylvania. Authorities say he has ties to both California and Nevada, and the U.S. Marshals Service is now assisting efforts to locate him.
For now, the cracked porcelain mask has been replaced by a photograph and a name.
Yet one question remains.
Where is Zymire Hughes?
What began before sunrise as a series of bizarre encounters on the streets of Philadelphia has now become a multi-state search for a wanted man.
All because someone apparently decided that an ordinary Wednesday morning needed a little more nightmare fuel.
And somewhere in Philadelphia, there are probably a few early-morning joggers who will never look at a porcelain doll quite the same way again.
This remains an active case. Allegations against Hughes have not been proven in court.
