New Episode (#107) Out Now
Most horror movies begin as fiction. But sometimes the truth is even more terrifying.
In April 1990, Marilynn DePue, a respected Michigan high school guidance counselor and mother of three, vanished after an encounter with her ex-husband, Dennis DePue. What followed was a shocking murder investigation, a terrifying eyewitness account involving a body dumped behind an abandoned schoolhouse, and a desperate cross-country manhunt that captivated the nation.
Along the way, we’ll explore the chilling encounter experienced by Ray and Marie Thornton, the role that Unsolved Mysteries and legendary host Robert Stack played in helping bring the case to national attention, and the dramatic police pursuit that brought Dennis DePue’s flight from justice to an end.
We’ll also examine how these real-life events inspired the unforgettable opening sequence of the 2001 horror film Jeepers Creepers, and discuss the controversial history of the film’s director, Victor Salva.
This is the tragic story of Marilynn DePue—a story that proves real life can sometimes be more frightening than fiction.

Meet the Depues
Before their names became associated with one of Michigan’s most notorious murder cases, Dennis and Marilynn DePue appeared to be living a comfortable middle-class life in Branch County. Marilynn was a highly respected guidance counselor at Coldwater High School, where she spent nearly two decades helping students prepare for college and careers. Dennis worked for the Michigan Treasury Department as a property specialist and tax assessor. Together, they raised three children and seemed, from the outside, to embody the stability and success many families strive for. But behind that outward appearance, their marriage was quietly unraveling. As tensions grew and a bitter divorce unfolded, the DePues’ lives would take a tragic turn that would ultimately place their family at the center of a murder investigation, a nationwide manhunt, and one of the most unusual true crime stories in modern American history.

The Murder of Marilynn Depue
In April 1990, the lives of the DePue family changed forever. Following the breakdown of their marriage and a contentious divorce, Marilynn disappeared after an encounter with her ex-husband, Dennis. Concern quickly spread among family members, friends, and coworkers when she failed to return home. What began as a missing persons case soon evolved into a homicide investigation, sending shockwaves through the Coldwater community. As investigators worked to piece together Marilynn’s final movements, evidence increasingly pointed toward Dennis, who had vanished by the time authorities began searching for answers. The tragic events that unfolded over Easter weekend would soon attract national attention and set in motion a manhunt that would last nearly a year.

Unsolved Mysteries
By early 1991, Dennis DePue had successfully evaded authorities for nearly a year. With leads growing scarce and the case receiving less public attention, investigators turned to one of the most influential crime programs on television: Unsolved Mysteries. Hosted by the iconic Robert Stack, the series had built a reputation for bringing fugitives, missing persons, and cold cases into living rooms across America. The DePue case was a natural fit—a respected mother and educator murdered, a suspect on the run, and a dramatic eyewitness account that seemed almost unbelievable.
When the episode aired, millions of viewers were introduced to Marilynn’s story and the nationwide search for Dennis. What happened next demonstrated the remarkable power of television in an era before social media, ultimately helping push the case toward its dramatic conclusion.

A Blaze of Glory
After nearly a year on the run, Dennis DePue’s time as a fugitive was coming to an end. Living under an assumed name and moving between states, he had managed to stay ahead of investigators for months. But as public awareness of the case increased, the pressure began to mount. In March 1991, law enforcement officers attempted to stop a van carrying stolen license plates, unknowingly setting in motion the final chapter of the DePue case.
What followed was a dramatic multi-state pursuit that crossed from Louisiana into Mississippi. The chase escalated into a dangerous confrontation involving roadblocks, gunfire, and desperate attempts to avoid capture. Surrounded and facing arrest, DePue made a final decision that ensured he would never stand trial for Marilynn’s murder. The manhunt was over, but the shocking conclusion only deepened public fascination with a case that had already captured national attention.

Jeepers Creepers
More than a decade after Marilynn DePue’s murder, elements of the case found an unexpected second life in popular culture. Horror fans began noticing striking similarities between the real-life events surrounding the DePue investigation and the opening scenes of the 2001 film Jeepers Creepers. The movie’s story begins with travelers on a lonely rural road witnessing a suspicious figure disposing of what appears to be a body near an abandoned building before becoming the target of a terrifying pursuit.
While Jeepers Creepers quickly departs into the realm of supernatural horror, its opening sequence bears a remarkable resemblance to the eyewitness account provided by Ray and Marie Thornton during the DePue investigation. Director Victor Salva later acknowledged that the case helped inspire portions of the film. As a result, a tragic Michigan murder became forever linked to one of the most recognizable horror movies of the early 2000s, introducing a new generation to a story rooted in very real events.
