Did You Know About… The Teleported Soldier of 1593?

From Manila to Mexico City

I stumbled upon a fascinating story for you. A little history, mystery, and maybe even a touch of the supernatural. If you don’t like reading, you can listen to me tell you the story with the YouTube video posted below.

The Spanish Soldier

Gil Perez was a soldier of the Spanish Empire who, if legend is to be believed, was mysteriously transported across the Pacific Ocean in the blink of an eye.

October 24th, 1593, was a humid day in Manila, the capital of the Spanish-controlled Philippines at the time. Gil Perez, a soldier, was standing guard outside the Governor’s Palace. Tensions were high because the governor had just been assassinated the day before by Chinese pirates. Perez was tired; he’d been standing watch for hours, and like any exhausted soldier, he took a moment to lean against the wall and close his eyes.

But here’s where things get strange

When Gil Perez opened his eyes, he wasn’t in Manila anymore. He was standing—confused and disoriented—in the Plaza Mayor of Mexico City. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with geography, Mexico City is about 9,000 miles away from Manila. This was 1593, long before airplanes or modern transportation, so how could a simple soldier have possibly made that journey in an instant?

The people in Mexico City thought Gil Perez was either a deserter or mad. After all, he was still in his guard uniform from the Philippines, which raised some eyebrows. He was questioned by the local authorities, but Perez kept insisting that he had no idea how he ended up there. He told them the last thing he remembered was standing guard in Manila, just after the governor’s assassination.

At first, no one believed him. It sounded absurd—impossible even. But here’s where things get even more interesting. Several months later, news arrived from the Philippines, confirming the assassination of the governor on the exact date that Perez described. Officials also verified that Gil Perez had indeed been stationed in Manila on that day.

So, what happened? Did Gil Perez somehow teleport across the Pacific? Was he part of some divine intervention? Or is this just a story that grew into legend over time?

Whatever the explanation, Gil Perez’s story remains one of history’s most puzzling unsolved mysteries, leaving us with more questions than answers.
