Feeling Old? Here’s a list of things turning 40 this year

A look back at movies, television, music, and video games that made their debut in 1983.

I was six-years-old when all of these things were released. It doesn’t seem that long ago but unfortunately, it is.

Movies

1983 was a pretty good year for movies. Scarface, The Outsiders, Trading Places, Return of the Jedi, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Flashdance, Risky Business, and A Christmas Story were all released in theaters that year.

Television

A handful of shows that would go on to become classics in the industry hit the airwaves in 1983. The A-Team, Mama’s Family, Wheel of Fortune, Webster, Reading Rainbow, The Joy of Painting, Sally Jessy Raphael, and the Love Connection made a splash that year; at least one of them is still going strong today.

Music

Forty years later and some of these artists are still making headlines. There were plenty of big album releases in 1983. The Police, Cyndi Lauper, the Violent Femmes, Def Leppard, the Talking Heads, Madonna, Metallica, Huey Lewis, Motley Crue, and New Edition had some of the best album sales that year.

Video Games

If I was lucky, I’d get to head to the mall with a pocket full of quarters. I’m sure I played each of these at one time or another. Dragon’s Lair took a lot of my money and I don’t think I ever made it past the first screen. Happy 40th Birthday to these arcade classics.

Time goes by pretty quickly. Did I miss any big releases turning the big 4-0 in 2023? Let me know in the comment section.
