Book of Trades by Edward W. Miller (1847)

Potential Jobs for 19th Century Youth

In 1847, Edward W. Miller published and printed the twelve volume “Young American’s Library”. The Philadelphia firm published many books but the “Book of Trades” is part of the only known series for juveniles. Eventually the series was added to the sixteen book “Juvenile Miniatures” collection resulting in 28 titles.

Mostly for Boys

The book was intended for children and immigrants to learn about possible job opportunities. Of the 45 jobs listed, only three appear to be made for girls. Nursing, teaching, and housekeeping. Button making and basket weaving were, apparently, considered too risky for women.

Classic Illustrations

Aside from the book’s misogynist leanings, I thought the illustrations were well done for the time and I thought I’d share. Maybe it’ll inspire you to draw or create your own line of updated children’s books.
